General Social Survey (GSS) Competition
The General Social Survey (GSS) is a nationally representative personal-interview survey of the United States adult population that collects data on a wide range of topics: behavioral items such as group membership and participation; personal psychological evaluations including measures of well-being, misanthropy, and life satisfaction; attitudinal questions on such public issues as crime and punishment, race relations, gender roles, and spending priorities; and demographic characteristics of respondents and their parents. GSS has provided data on contemporary American society since 1972, serving as a barometer of social change and trends in attitudes, behaviors, and attributes of the United States adult population. In 1984, GSS stimulated cross-national research by collaborating with Australia, Britain, and Germany to develop data-collection programs modeled on GSS. This program of comparative cross-national research, called the International Social Survey Program, now includes 43 nations and enables researchers and analysts to place findings and trends from the United States within a comparative perspective. Since its inception, GSS has completed 26 in-person, cross-sectional surveys of the adult household population of the United States with response rates that exceed 70%. The survey is currently fielded biennially. Data from GSS are made available to scholars, students, and the public for research, analysis, and educational activities within 12 months of data collection. The 2006 GSS initiated two innovations that shape the conduct of future surveys. First, it gathered the baseline sample for a GSS panel component, with a sub-sample of cases to be re-interviewed in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Second, GSS "core" questions (items that appear regularly on surveys) were translated into Spanish and administered in either English or Spanish, as needed, beginning with the 2006 administration. It is anticipated that this practice will continue in future surveys.

Paleo Perspectives on Climate Change
The goal of research funded under the interdisciplinary P2C2 solicitation is to utilize key geological, chemical, and biological records of climate-system variability to provide insights into the mechanisms and rate of change that characterized Earth's past climate variability, the sensitivity of Earth's climate system to changes in forcing, and the response of key components of Earth⬢s system to these changes. Important scientific objectives of P2C2 are to: 1) provide comprehensive paleoclimate data sets that can serve as model test data sets analogous to instrumental observations and 2) enable transformative syntheses of paleoclimate data and modeling outcomes to understand the response of the longer term and higher magnitude variability of the climate system that is observed in the geological record.

National Wetlands Awards
National Wetlands Awards
The National Wetlands Awards are presented annually to individuals who have excelled in wetlands protection, restoration, and education. Through coverage in the National Wetlands Newsletter, coordinated media outreach, and an awards ceremony on Capitol Hill, awardees receive national recognition and attention for their outstanding efforts. The Environmental Law Institute coordinates the awards program while federal agency co-sponsors provide financial support, serve on the selection committee, and participate in the ceremony. In addition to recognizing individuals for their outstanding contributions to wetlands, the awards provide an opportunity for awardees to meet other conservation leaders throughout the United States. The awards are given in six categories: Education and Outreach; Science Research; Conservation and Restoration; Landowner Stewardship; State, Tribal, and Local Program Development; and Wetland Community Leader.

Partner University Fund (PUF)
Partner University Fund (PUF)
The Embassy of France to the United States recently launched a new public-private partnership called Partner University Fund (PUF) to promote innovative collaborations of excellence in research and education between French and American institutions of higher education. PUF supports emerging transatlantic partnerships with a potential to be sustained after the phasing out of the grant. Partnerships may combine elements such as: joint initiatives in research and publications, faculty and postdoctoral mobility, collaboration in teaching, shared programs, and joint and dual degrees at the master's and Ph.D. levels. Projects need to be jointly submitted by--at least--one American and one French university. They can be funded for the duration of a 3-year period, subject to annual review by the selection committee.

Sandler Program for Asthma Research
Research Program
The Sandler Program for Asthma Research's mission is to develop important new pathways of investigation in basic research on the pathogenesis of asthma. Because the program seeks groundbreaking ideas, outstanding investigators from outside the field of asthma are particularly encouraged to apply. Preliminary results are not required. The application is brief, and there is a quick turnaround time for review. Investigators with prior experience in asthma research are eligible to apply, but they must demonstrate that the proposed work represents a departure from their current and past research. Another important objective of the program is to promote scientific interaction between awardees. To facilitate this, an annual meeting of awardees is held.
Deadline: 2008-02-07
The latest applications will be received by the Sandler office on February 7, 2008 is 5:00 PM, Pacific Standard Time.

Broad Medical Research Program
The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Foundation created the Broad Medical Research Program (BMRP) for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) grants in 2001. BMRP will provide rapid funding for as many as 2 years for basic or clinical IBD research projects that: (a) are innovative; (b) are in the early stages of exploration; (c) will improve diagnosis, therapy, or prevention of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis in the near future; and (d) will lead to funding by more traditional granting agencies. Preference is given to proposals with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in IBD, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply.
