New Faculty-Postdoc-Graduate Programs

American Philosophical Society: Franklin Research Grants

This is a program of small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in all areas of knowledge. The Franklin program is particularly designed to help meet the cost of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials; the costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses.Deadline:October 1, 2006

Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA): Medical Student Research Fellowships

The fellowship is offered to medical/dental/veterinary students who have substantial interests in research and teaching careers in pharmacology-clinical pharmacology and who are willing to spend full-time in a specific research effort within a pharmacology or clinical pharmacology unit. Fellowships are available for a minimum period of three months or any period of time up to 12 months with a maximum stipend of $18,000. The commitment must be full-time. For a fellowship less than one year, it must begin and end within the academic year beginning July 1. The student may undertake this investigative effort at his own school or at another institution. The principal aim of this program is to generate interest in research careers in pharmacology, including clinical pharmacology, among medical, dental, and veterinary students. Students who are not already in a training sequence leading to a research career or students already in an M.D./Ph.D. program for whom additional financial support is appropriate are both eligible to apply. Awards will not be made to a student in a M.D./Ph.D. program who will have been awarded the M.D. degree before the beginning of July 1, 2005. Depending on the particular medical school curriculum and the length of the fellowship, the student may have to interrupt his scholastic training to enable the full-time requirement of the program to be satisfied.Deadline:October 1, 2006

Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA): Postdoctoral Fellowships in Health Outcomes

The PhRMA Foundation Postdoctoral program in health outcomes provides stipend support for individuals engaged in a research training program that will create or extend their credentials in health outcomes. The purpose (intent) of this program is to support post doctoral career development activities of individuals prepared (or preparing) to engage in research that will strengthen representation of health outcomes in schools of pharmacy, medicine, and public health. To accomplish these goals, support will be provided for a 2-year period to selected individuals who are beginning careers in health outcomes research and who give promise of outstanding development as researchers.Deadline:October 1, 2006

Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA): Postdoctoral Fellowships in Pharmaceutics

Pharmaceutics is that area of the pharmaceutical sciences that seeks the optimal development of a drug delivery product or device and its subsequent performance in the delivery of the drug from the device following its administration to a patient. Pharmaceutics is a multidisciplinary area, with significant underpinnings from such basic scientific disciplines as physical chemistry, physical organic chemistry, and biophysics. The number of well-trained graduates from Ph.D. programs in pharmaceutics who further develop and refine their research skills through formal postdoctoral training is limited. The reasons for this frequent absence of postdoctoral research experience are several. They include strong employment demand by industry and academia for junior scientists when they graduate from doctoral programs and a shortage of funds available to universities for the ready support of postdoctoral fellows. This situation serves to compromise the ultimate research capabilities of many such graduates. The lack of postdoctoral experience can be particularly telling for Ph.D. graduates seeking academic positions and often renders them less competitive in the successful pursuit of extramural funding--a factor which is so necessary for a productive research program.Deadline:October 1, 2006

Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA): Predoctoral Training in Pharmaceutics

Progress in pharmaceutics research requires the constant entry of well-trained investigators into the field. The PhRMA Foundation recognizes the critical need for such scientists and appreciates that the training of such individuals is both long and expensive, requiring 4 to 5 years of study and research. To encourage the entry of more qualified individuals into this area, the PhRMA Foundation program aims at supporting promising students during their thesis research by providing assistance in the form of stipend and funds to cover costs incidental to the training. Applications will be accepted for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. The program is designed for applicants who expect to complete the requirements for the Ph.D. in pharmaceutics in 2 years or less from the time the fellowship begins. For the purposes of this program, pharmaceutics includes basic pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, and pharmaceutical technology. The fundamental aspects of pharmacokinetics are not included since these are covered by PhRMA Foundation awards in pharmacology and toxicology. Students in this area are encouraged to submit an application to that program. The program assumes that the fellows will devote full-time (including summers) to their research. The PhRMA Foundation fellowship may not be used as a supplement to funds from other fellowships or assistantships. However, this does not preclude institutions supplementing a fellowship with their own funds in order to bring the stipend within the normal range of the institution. The focus of the program is to assist in the predoctoral training of the applicant. It should not be viewed as a program to fund a research project. It should be stressed that the quality of the research proposed will be a major factor in the selection of fellows. The student's success in carrying out a rigorous academic [i.e., course work] program will be another major selection factor. Research projects which extend or develop the proprietary value of specific drug products are not acceptable in this program. This exclusion does not preclude research in which specific drug products are used to test hypotheses which have a general applicability. Applications, however good, which do not meet the aims of the program will be disapproved.Deadline: October 1, 2006

Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA): Predoctoral Fellowship in Health Outcomes

Progress in health outcomes research requires the constant entry of well-trained investigators into the field. The PhRMA Foundation recognizes that the training of such individuals is long and expensive, requiring 4 to 5 years of postbaccalaureate study and research. To provide some assistance in this training sequence, the PhRMA Foundation program aims at supporting promising students during their thesis research. The program provides a stipend and funds to cover costs incidental to the training. Applications will be accepted for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years. The program is designed for candidates who expect to complete the requirements for the Ph.D. in the field of health outcomes in 2 years or less from the time the fellowship begins. The program assumes that the fellows will devote full-time (including summers) to their research. The PhRMA Foundation fellowship may not be used as a supplement to funds from other fellowships, traineeships, or assistantships. The focus of the program is to assist in the predoctoral training of the candidate. It should not be viewed as a program to fund a research project. Applications, however good, which do not meet the aims of the program will be disapproved.Deadline: October 1, 2006
